There are two main type of home distribution systems play back and mini systems and two types of mini systems types of mini system.  The cupboard system hides all the equipment away, whereas the set back has all the equipment positioned behind the television.

The following describes the cupboard system only.  The mini systems provide a repeat of all the programmes available at the main point, including the output from the satellite decoder, digital terrestrial decoder and VCR. to all the other points.

At the main television position, in addition to the normal outlet plate there would be up to two more. One of these is for passing the combined programmes from all the equipment at the main point to the control unit in the cupboard. From the cupboard, the processed signals are passed to all the other points.

Connecting a mini system is dependent on the equipment being used at the main point.  The links below are to connection drawings for various the options.

Decoders should be connected in the following priority order for signal from the primary socket:-

1. Terrestrial digital decoder (free to view etc.)

2. Sky or Eutelsat satellite decoder

3. VCR

In order to provide the signal to the television associated with the decoders and to the feed-back socket, some mini systems have a third socket at the main point specifically to feed the television. Others require a small signal splitting device to be used, one of which is normally provided with the new system in each apartment.

Once connected, the output channels may need setting on each item of equipment. If, after attempting to tune the other television on the system, it is found that some channels are either missing or suffering from interference, then the channel changing instructions should be followed for each item of equipment. Channels should be chosen to avoid interference and, in general, channel spacing of 1, 5 or 9 should not be used.

When first connecting a television to the system, it is necessary to tune the television in the same way that one would normally tune a television in for the first time. Most modern televisions have automatic search facilities which may be used.

Follow the link for MATV systems for more guidance on television set up, secondary points and tuning.
